Project Flowchar

Testing different FCDI configurations

Desalination tests are going full speed ahead! Read about the effects of our work.

We are playing with different FCDI configurations, e.g., comparing graphite and steel current collectors.

Graphite is more resistant to corrosion, yet it also has higher electrical resistance than metals. As there are no perfect solutions, we are trying to select the ones that will fully meet our project goals.

Another important issue is the geometry of the electrode flow path – the serpentine curved directly into the current collectors is a typical design. Our graphite plates were manufactured by the Czylok company and you must admit – they look splendid!

We are running tests under various applied potential and different salt concentrations in the feedwater. We are also investigating the effect of the flow electrode composition by changing carbon content and electrolyte concentration. However, the individual optimization of these parameters will be most likely required for each tested material.

Now that our FCDI module is running smoothly on the commercial activated carbon, it’s finally time to test the chars from biomass gasification.

Our research in WP2 is electrifying, but sometimes salty as well πŸ˜‰
